Gynecologic Robotic Surgery

Robot-assisted procedures in the hands of skilled surgeons can be less invasive and do not require large incisions, making them an ideal choice for many gynecological surgeries. UC Irvine Health gynecologic oncologists use the da Vinci Surgical System® to perform minimally invasive and robot-assisted surgeries for the treatment of cancer and other conditions involving the female genital tract. The UC Irvine Health Robotic Oncology Center uses the latest robotic technology to treat cancer. It is one of a handful of multidisciplinary robotic oncology centers in the United States and the first of its kind in the western United States. Through the center, patients at UC Irvine Medical Center, Orange County's only university hospital, have access to the expertise and care provided by our highly skilled team of surgeons, nurses and technicians who specialize in using the da Vinci system.

Dr. Robert E. Bristow Robert E. Bristow, MD, MBA
Gynecologic oncologist


Dr. Bristow, director of the UC Irvine Health Ovarian Cancer Center, provides consultation and care for women with gynecologic cancers and those at risk for developing them. He specializes in ovarian cancer and also treats women who need complex pelvic surgery. An experienced surgeon, Bristow performs robot-assisted hysterectomies and radical hysterectomies, staging for endometrial cancer and cervical cancer, removal of fallopian tubes and ovaries and other complex pelvic procedures using the robotic surgical platform.

Dr. Leslie M. Randall Leslie M. Randall, MD
Gynecologic oncologist


Dr. Randall performs robot-assisted surgery for both uterine and cervical cancer. She was trained in laparoscopic surgery at the University of Louisville by the immediate past president of the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists (AAGL). Trained in minimally surgical techniques for gynecological oncology conditions, she routinely performs robot-assisted hysterectomies at UC Irvine Medical Center, including complicated procedures such as radical hysterectomy.

Dr. Krishnansu S. Tewari Krishnansu S. Tewari, MD
Gynecologic oncologist


Dr. Tewari was the first physician at UC Irvine Medical Center to perform robot-assisted surgery for endometrial cancer and cervical cancer. He also performed UC Irvine’s first single-incision laparoscopic hysterectomy. Tewari is board-certified in both obstetrics and gynecology, and gynecologic oncology, and is repeatedly listed in Orange Coast Magazine as one of the best doctors in Orange County for gynecologic oncology. He has written about 70 scientific articles and book chapters, and he is currently leading the country's first randomized Phase 3 clinical trial using anti-angiogenesis drugs in cervical cancer.
